I urge you to quickly take a minute to look around your room. Could you maybe go that extra mile to jazz it up a bit? If so, here’s the perfect gal to connect with. Meet Randi Mortenson from Home By Randi....
Describe your business: My business is all about making beautiful decorative throw pillows, cushions and blankets. I source the fabric and sew each item myself. It started with my daughter's sewing machine and me teaching her to sew. Now I've expanded into making custom bench cushions
What drives you to do what you do? What motivates you? I'm really driven by the flexibility of my work, but also motivated to create beautiful pieces for my customers. The feedback I receive keeps me motivated.
What has surprised you most when owning your own business? That it's not as difficult as I thought it would be. The most challenging part for me was putting myself out there and asking for business.
What was it like when you first started? Very confusing! I've done freelance service based work before as a business, but it's much different than creating product. I had a lot of learning and trial by error in the beginning.
What is something people don’t know about your business? I learned how to sew by watching my mother make our figure skating costumes. And I didn't take it up again until I started my business.
What would your customers say they love most about doing business with you? I'm a really great listener and I pay attention to the details.
How do you motivate and encourage yourself or staff? I joke with my kids that our pets are now my coworkers because I work from home while the kids are in school. So no staff, but I try to get out as much and meet with other business women and the maker community. The Saskatoon maker community is so diverse and supportive.
Where do you see your business in the next years? Someday I would like to expand the Home by Randi brand beyond the products I make, but I'm not sure what that would involve. I'm also interested in expanding into interior design services.
What are your greatest challenges? Work life balance, as I'm sure most people would say! When you work from home, its difficult to know when to stop work.
What do you love most about your town/city? I'm from Warman, but spend a lot of time in Saskatoon. What I love most about Warman is all the growth I've seen since we moved here in 2008. And Saskatoon has amazing scenery and has some great downtown restaurants.
Why do you think it is important for people to support local? Its important because it makes a direct impact on that person's life. It might pay for a child's extra curricular activities or school supplies. Plus local businesses have so much to offer through job creation and their contribution to the local economy.
What are your favorite restaurants? It would have to be Las Palapas.
What are your favorite things to do locally? We love to visit the Western Development Museum with our kids.
