Let's hear what Karlee has to say about her new adventure... ~Rhonda Lavoie
Describe your business: My business is called salon AVA. It is a home-based salon in Silverspring. I offer colors and cuts for the whole family as well as special occasion styles and waxing services.
What drives you to do what you do? What motivates you? I am motivated to help people feel there best and achieve their hair goals. Building long term relationships is a great perk that comes along with it!
What has surprised you most when owning your own business? I am surprised how much I love working from home. The chance to make my own hours and work hard for my family is so satisfying.
What was it like when you first started? I found it challenging to have the uncertainty of not knowing how busy I would be in the beginning. I had to learn the ins and outs of marketing and advertising on social networks. To my amazement, I have gained many new clientele that are booking all the time and am enjoying reconnecting with my old clients again.
What is something people don’t know about your business? I worked in the salon industry for 17 years prior to opening a home business. I had taken 3 years away from the chair to pursue other career challenges as well as a one-year mat leave. I ultimately realized that the beauty industry was my true calling and have a fresh new excitement for being back behind the chair. It feels like home!
What would your customers say they love most about doing business with you? I have had a lot of feedback from clients about the convenience of booking with me and not having to find parking. The environment is comfortable and they feel at home.
How do you motivate and encourage yourself? I am motivated by my family every day. They all have been helpful and encouraging along the way.
Where do you see your business in the next years? My business has grown so much already in the short time I have been open. I grow from clients sharing their experience and recommending my services. I can only see my clientele growing over the years!
What are your greatest challenges? My greatest challenge will always be the inconsistency of not knowing when will be my busy times and when it will be slow. This has made me incredibly good at budgeting and I know as my business progresses I will have a more consistent flow of clients.
What is something most people don’t know about you? Most people don't know that for about 20 years I did synchronized skating. I traveled all over Canada doing competitions and made some lifelong friends.
What do you love most about your town/city? Saskatoon is a city that feels like a small town. I love our riverbank and all the amazing places to walk. The people who live here all seem to be connected somehow.
Why do you think it is important for people to support local? Supporting local businesses is so important! The owners put all their own blood, sweat and tears into making it run every day and most of the time it is made possible also by the family and friends that surround them.
What are your favorite restaurants? I Love Cohens Beer Republic. The atmosphere is so relaxed and the food is incredible.
What are your favorite things to do locally? It's been a while but my husband and I LOVE going for walks along the river and making a few pit stops at some restaurants downtown for a beer and appetizers. Sort of a walking pub crawl.
